NMJC stretches winning streak to three with wins over Garden City and Lamar

New College - ball team won both ends of its doubleheader Sunday, beating Garden City Community College 10-6 in the morning and then knocking off Lamar Community College 15-7 in the afternoon.

 

The Thunderbirds scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth to get the win.

 

Against Garden City, NMJC banged out 11 hits and drew five walks. The T-Birds only extra base hit was a double from Carlos Contreras who went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in and a run scored. Zac Vooletich was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored while Angel Delacruz was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Ollie Thompson scored a pair of runs. Hobbs graduate David Ortega also scored a run for the T-Birds.

 

On the mound, Ty Stephenson got the start and pitched five innings. He allowed two runs, both earned, on six hits and two walks. He also struck out seven. Mark Barillas recorded four outs. He gave up three hits and a walk while allowing four runs, only two of which were earned. Cade Acrey threw the final 2.2 scoreless innings to get the win. He walked one and allowed two hits while striking out two.

 

In their second game, the T-Birds scored four times in the top of the third to take a 5-2 lead over Lamar and held the lead the rest of the game. NMJC also pushed four runs across in the fourth and three in the sixth. NMJC scored once in the seventh and twice in the eighth.

 

New Mexico Junior College had 12 hits against Lamar with four T-Birds collecting multiple hits. Daniel Hernandez had three hits while Soterio Ramirez, Joab Gonzalez, and Thompson each had two. Thompson also drove in four runs.

 

Pablo Suarez pitched the first five innings to get the win. He scattered seven hits and three walks while allowing six runs. He also struck out six. Jairo Vasquez threw the final three innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out eight to get the save.

 

With the wins, NMJC has now won three straight and improves to 5-3 on the season. The T-Birds will be at Cisco College on Wednesday with a noon start time.
