T-Bird baseball drops two

The New Mexico Junior College baseball team opened its season with a pair of losses Thursday when the Thunderbirds fell to Arizona Western College 8-1 and then lost 13-9 to Gateway Community College at the College of Southern Nevada Tournament in Henderson, Nevada.

In its season-opener against Arizona Western College, the T-Birds gave up two runs in the bottom of the second, two more in the bottom of the fourth, and four in the sixth to fall behind 8-0. NMJC scored its only run of the game in the top of the seventh.

In the nightcap, NMJC fell behind 5-0 in the first before scoring a run in the bottom of the second. However, Gateway scored four times in the third and once in the fourth to put the T-Birds down 10-1.

New Mexico Junior College started its comeback bid in the bottom of the fourth. The T-Birds scored three times in the fourth and added five runs in the bottom of the seventh, cutting their deficit to 10-9.

That was as close as NMJC would get though.
