Gideon George commits to BYU

The good news keeps pouring in for Brigham Young University (BYU) as the Cougars added Nigerian JUCO player Gideon George to the 2020 recruiting class. George came to Provo on an official weekend visit last and was present for the match against Gonzaga.

Gideon is from Abuja, Nigeria and currently plays at New Mexico Junior College. The first thing that stands out from his film is his athleticism; it measures 2m00 with a wingspan of 2.16m and plays a maximum of four positions. In 23 games this season, he averaged 14.3 points and 8 rebounds per game while shooting 50.6% and 35.5% three-point. George does most of his damage around the circle, but he has improved his three-point shooting efficiency from 9% in first year to over 35% this season.

Defensively, George uses his length and versatility to influence shots and passes around the circle and the perimeter. He has had two games this season with four interceptions and another where he has recorded 5 blocks. Its length and its ability to pick up bounces will allow it to play between 2 to 4 positions during its stay at BYU.

George had never been to the United States before starting New Mexico JC. He was detected in a basketball camp run by JUCO Advocate where George came after spending 10 hours on the bus to attend. It was October 5, 2018.

George has also received offers from Kent State and Weber State and will be junior next season when he arrives on campus.

"We met Gideon in Nigeria for the first time during the camp we organized there. It took about 60 seconds to realize that he was special not only on the field, but also outside. His work ethic is incredible and in two years, he went from a broken concrete site in Owerri (Nigeria) to BYU. Unbelievable." - Juco Advocate
