Makarawu Qualifies in the 100m at the John Jacobs Invitational

The NMJC men's track & field team finished with four national qualifying standards and two improved qualifiers April 12-13 at the John Jacobs Invitational in Norman, Okla.

Tapiwanashe (Carlie) Makarawu nationally qualified in the 100m this week with his time of 10.14. Makarawu ran a faster time this season in Austin at the Texas Relays, but it was not a wind-legal time (under 4.0). The sophomore sprinter is now No. 1 in the 100m and is .03 seconds faster than the nearest runner.

Takudzwa (Donald) Chiyangwa was a national qualifier in the 400m race after finishing in 47.19. Chiyangwa's fastest time this year is 46.10 from the indoor season. The Zimbabwean is ranked No. 2 in the NJCAA for the 400m.

Dyimond Walker nationally qualified in the 800m with a time of 1:52.45 this week. Walker's finish was 2.65 seconds faster than what he ran at the Masked Rider Open.

Thrower Joao Dalandrea was an improved qualifier in the discus and a national qualifier in the hammer throw. Dalandrea's discus throw was 51.12m, which is No. 8 in the NJCAA for the event. The freshman threw the hammer 50.43m to qualify for nationals. Dalandrea sits at No. 11 in the NJCAA for the event.

The Thunderbirds are ranked No. 3 in Week 4's NJCAA DI Men's Outdoor Track & Field Rating Index.

The T-Birds will travel to Waco, Texas April 19-20 to compete in the Michael Johnson Invitational at Clyde Hart Track & Field Stadium.
