Bio

David Evans is entering his second season as the assistant track and field coach (Throws/assistant cross country coach) at NMJC. Evans primarily works as the throws coach for the Thunderbirds. He also assists NMJC cross country head coach Jeff Becker with coaching and recruiting.

During the 2022 cross country season, Evans helped guide the women's team to runner-up finishes at the 2022 NJCAA Cross Country Championships and Half Marathon Championships in Tallahassee, Fla. The men's cross country team finished in fifth place at the 2022 NJCAA Cross Country Championships and in a tie for third at the Half Marathon Championships.

Evans coached javelin thrower Anisha Gibbons to an outdoor national title in 2023. He was also the assistant for all four track & field national titles the Thunderbirds won in 2023.

Evans arrived in Hobbs from Denver, Colo. where he coached football, wrestling, track, and baseball. His stops include Columbine, Heritage and Littleton high schools. As a track assistant, Evans was the throws coach for numerous state champions along with countless athletes who finished on the podium. 

Evans personally coached the school record holders in shot put and discus at Columbine and Heritage High. He has 23 seasons of coaching experience total. 

Evans is originally from Lyons, Kansas. He ran one year of track at Barton County Community College before transferring to Hutchinson Community College. Evans graduated from Fort Hays State University in 2000 with a B.S. in Physical Education. 

Evans was an All-Conference RMAC Javelin Thrower for Coach Jim Krob at Fort Hays State University. He also had the pleasure to train under Randy Cole, Pat Becher, and Dennis Weber. 

Coach Evans said he "will always be grateful for the mentorship of Kevin Young, Ray Barron, and Sheri Rossing. Without them, I’d never made it anywhere."

Evans is a level I USATF certified coach.
