Rice Wins Goat Tying at Frank Phillips College

The NMJC T-bird rodeo team travelled to the Frank Philips College rodeo, held in Canadian, Texas this past weekend, where our local Lea County athletes led the charge.

Maddy Rice of Lovington pulled off the win in the goat tying. She was 7.5 seconds on her first goat which was good enough for a 5-8th place finish in the round. She then added a smoking 6.8 second short round winning run to her first round placing and came out on top in the average. The win netted her 127.5 regional points. This led to a 4th place for the women's team at the FPC rodeo.

Hobbs resident Colton Able led the charge for the men's team in the tie down roping. His 9.4 second run was good enough for 2nd place in the first round. He then followed that up with a 12.5 second run in the short round, good enough for 6th in the round and 3rd in the average. This gave Colton 100 tie-down points and which helped the men's team finish in 7th place.

Kaila Helms had a 3.0 second run in the long round of the breakaway roping. This brought her back to the short round splitting 9/10th. She followed that up with a 3.2 second run splitting 4th in the short round and winning 5th in the overall average.

Caden Beatty made the short round in the team roping. His 7.5 second run in the first round with partner Trace Foust was 4th in the round. They finished the short round with a 12 second run for 6th place in the round and 5th in the average.

The T-birds have a couple of weekends off then finish the fall season Oct. 31-Nov. 2nd at the Texas Tech rodeo in Lubbock.
