T-Bird Rodeo Sends 4 Athletes to Vegas

The New Mexico Junior College rodeo teams will have four student-athletes competing Dec. 8-16 in Las Vegas, Nev.

The women's rodeo team has two of their athletes competing in the Mike and Sherrylynn Johnson's Vegas Tuffest Jr. World Championship.

Freshmen Evann Segura and Codi Reed will contend in the U-19 breakaway roping competition. The duo earned their spot in the competition after making it through a local qualifying event. The teammates will have an opportunity to battle for a purse of more than $10,000 at the competition.

"The events held in December in Las Vegas are great opportunities for our student-athletes to gain exposure and compete at the next level," women's rodeo head coach Alexa Wilcox said. "We are proud of our T-Bird rodeo athletes for their qualifications and are excited to see their success in the coming week."

The men's team also has two athletes competing in Las Vegas, Nev.

Freshman Isaiah Chavez will compete as an U-19 tie down roper in the Mike and Sherrylynn Johnson's Vegas Tuffest Jr. World Championship on Dec. 8. Sophomore Chase Skocdopole qualified for the 14.5 Roping at the World Series of Team Roping on Dec. 10. The number 14.5 indicates the skill level of the athlete and where they can enter for the roping competition.

"These Vegas ropings are another avenue for our student-athletes to showcase their talent on the national stage and hopefully they'll do well and come back with some big paychecks," men's rodeo head coach Stewy Kinley said.
