Back at home for the first time since November 28, the New Mexico Junior College women's basketball team picked up an easy win Thursday night as the Lady Thunderbirds easily handled the Lady Bulldogs of Clarendon College, winning 86-46.

 

"It has been a long time and we didn't play great," NMJC coach Drew Sanders said, "but it was a good win."

 

The Lady T-Birds jumped out to a huge lead in the first quarter, outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 21-5. NMJC opened the game with an 8-0 run. Clarendon College got on the board with six minutes left in the first quarter. The Lady T-Birds followed that with a 13-0 run. The Lady Bulldogs scored the final points of the first quarter on a trey with 44 second left in the first.

 

Leading 21-5 to start the second quarter, NMJC poured in another 26 points while allowing Clarendon to score 10 points. NMJC led 47-15 at the break.

 

New Mexico Junior College used all 10 players on the active roster in the first half and nine of the scored. The only player not to score in the first half was Brenda Costa.

 

"We got a lot of easy buckets in transition," Sanders said. "The other thing that was good, was we haven't been shooting the ball well from the perimeter and we knocked down some three-point shots. Hopefully that will help us in the future when people are zoning us up."

 

Clarendon College was able to get a little more offense going in the third quarter, but not much. The Lady Bulldogs nearly matched their first half point total, scoring 13 points. As for NMJC, the Lady T-Birds had another 20-point quarter, pouring in 24 to take a 71-28 lead.

 

The Lady Bulldogs opened the final 10 minutes of play with back-t o - b a ck treys and a 10-5 run as they had their best offensive quarter of the game. However, the Lady Bulldogs ' fourth quarter scoring was not a factor in the outcome of the game.

 

Clarendon College had 18 points in the fourth quarter and the Lady T-Birds scored just 15 points over the final 10 minutes of play.

 

"I thought in the fourth quarter we lost our intensity, especially defensively," Sanders said. "We started letting them get some baskets and we shouldn't have."

 

With 8:26 left in the game, Costa finally scored, getting every Lady T-Bird in the scoring column.

 

Four of the Lady T-Birds' five starters scored in double figures. Laci Hawthorne led all scorers with 21 points while Jurnee President, Robin Beck, and Thamires Andrade each chipped in 11. Mayra Caicedo also had 11 points, while coming in off the bench.

 

"That's the way we want it. We want to keep it balanced," Sanders said. "Hopefully, moving forward, a couple the kids who started tonight, who don't normally start, this will give them confidence and we ill get more that four (starters)."

 

Delphynia Sparks added seven points and Bryana Langford had six while Costa had four. Amaya Lewis and Barbara Zieniewska also scored for NMJC.

 

With the win, NMJC improves to 15-3 on the season and 3-1 in Western Junior College Athletic Conference play. Clarendon College falls to 7-13 and 0-4 in WJCAC play. Next up for the Lady T-Birds is a road trip to Borger, Texas for a game against Frank Phillips College on Monday night. Tipoff is set for 5:45 p.m. (CST)
