Lady T-Birds fall in Odessa

February 4, 2020

The New Mexico Junior College women's basketball team traveled to the OC Sports Center to face Odessa College in vital Western Junior College Athletic Conference matchup. Both the Lady T-Birds and Lady Wranglers came into the game at 6-2 in conference play and in a three-way tie for second place with Midland College. A win for either team would put them in a tie for second or in sole place of second.

After four quarters, the Lady T-Birds fell 62-53 to fall to 15-7 overall and 6-3 in WJCAC. Hobbs graduate Amaya Lewis led the team in scoring with 19 points. Mayra Caicedo had 12 points, and Selina Dockery added 10 points. Dawnyel Liar led the team with seven rebounds and four steals off the bench.

NMJC came out strong in the first quarter scoring 22 points and held Odessa College to

15. The Lady T-Birds could not maintain the same momentum from the first and the Lady Wranglers tied the game before taking a 34-32 lead at the half. The Lady T-Birds never found their offense in the second half and worse their defense disappeared with it. NMJC scored 10 in the third and 11 in fourth, but allowed the Lady Wranglers to score 18 in the third on 60 percent shooting and 10 in the fourth.

The Lady T-Birds will look to bounce back when they face Howard College on the road Monday at 5:45 p.m. MST.
