FIRST AMERICAN BANK News-Sun Athlete of the Week

New Mexico Junior College sophomore Amaya Lewis had a big week for the Lady Thunderbirds' basketball team as the 2018 Hobbs High School graduate helped the Lady T-Birds to a pair of wins, including upsetting the No. 1 team in the country. She scored 29 points with nine rebounds, six steals, and four assists over the course of the week.

It all started on Monday night when NMJC traveled to Big Spring, Texas to play Howard College. Lewis, playing off the bench, finished with 13 points as the Lady T-Birds beat the Lady Hawks 62-46. Lewis also had four steals, two assists, and one rebound while playing 32 minutes in a reserve role.

On Thursday, Lewis was in the starting lineup. The 2018 NMAA Class 6A state champion scored 16 points for the Lady T-Birds, as NMJC shocked No. 1 ranked and previously undefeated South Plains College 67-62 in Caster Activity Center. Lewis had seven in the first half and nine in the second half. She also had a team-high eight rebounds along with two steals and two assists.
