Lady T-Birds beat Clarendon

The New Mexico Junior College women's basketball team rode a big first quarter to a dominant win Monday night, beating Clarendon College 74-52.

The Lady Thunderbirds opened the game with a 9-0 run and pushed their lead over the Lady Bulldogs to 15-2 before eventually ending the first quarter with a 26-7 lead. Dawnyel Lair led the first quarter charge, scoring 10 points. NMJC poured in another 22 points in the second quarter, this time getting half of its scoring from Caliana Fenceroy (11 points).

In the second half, the teams traded points with NMJC and Clarendon each scoring 14 points. Then, in the fourth quarter, Clarendon scored 19 while NMJC managed just 12.

The Lady T-Birds had four players finish in double figures. Eliana Cabral and Brenda Costa led the team with 13 points each while Lair chipped in 12 and Fenceroy added 11.

Selina Dockery contributed eight points while Ebony Horton had six. Maria Cecelia Dos Santos chipped in five and Amaya Lewis, a 2018 Hobbs High School graduate finished with four.

With the win, NMJC improves to 18-7 on the season and moves to 9-3 in Western Junior College Athletic Conference action. The Lady T-Birds will now head to Borger, Texas to play Frank Phillips College on Thursday. Tip off is set for 5:45 p.m. (CST).
