NMJC men, women basketball players earn postseason awards

The New Mexico Junior College men and women's basketball team's picked up the final postseason honors of the season as three Thunderbirds were named All-Conference and two were named All-Region while the Lady Thunderbirds had two player named All-Conference.

The T-Birds had two players named to the 2019-20 NJCAA Region V All-Region Team. Twelve players overall made the team, two each from NMJC, Temple College, Clarendon College, and Ranger College while Collin County, Grayson, South Plains, New Mexico Military Institute had one player named.

For the Thunderbirds, Terrence Lewis and Gideon George were the two players from NMJC to make the team. During the Region V Tournament, Lewis had a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds in the T-Birds' 66-62 win over McLennan Community College while

George had 11 points and six rebounds with three assists and two steals.

In the second round of the Region V Tournament, NMJC came out on the short end, losing to Clarendon College 76-67. Lewis had another double-double, scoring 19 points and grabbing 13 boards, 10 of which were on the defensive end while George again scored 11 points to go with seven boards, three assists, and two steals.

In Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC) play, Lewis and George both were named All-Conference, as was Keaton Hervey. The only other

WJCAC team with three players was Clarendon College.

During WJCAC action, Lewis averaged 17.6 points a game with 9.1 rebounds a game. As for George, he finished WJCAC play averaging 14.8 points and 7.2 rebounds a game. Hervey averaged 15.9 points and 5.3 rebounds per game for the T-Birds.

As for the Lady Thunderbirds, NMJC had two players make the All-Conference team, Amaya Lewis and Dawnyel Lair. In addition to making the All-Conference team, Lair was also named the WJCAC's New Comer of the Year. Mayra Caicedo, who was listed as an Honorable Mention, was named the conference's Defensive Player of the Year. Then there was Eliana Cabral, who was also listed as an Honorable Mention

Amaya Lewis led the Lady T-Birds in scoring, averaged 12.9 points along with 4.5 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.9 steals a game during WJCAC action. Lair had a scoring average of 10.8 points per game in conference with 7.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 2.8 steals a game.

On the defensive end, Caicedo averaged 2.4 defensive rebounds and 3.6 steals a game during WJCAC play.
