NMJC’s Liburd wins long jump at Tech

The New Mexico Junior College women's indoor track and field team took part in the Texas Tech Open over the weekend and the Lady Thunderbirds finished with three new qualifying marks, five improved marks, set two school records, and won one event.

Kristal Liburd won the long jump with a distance of 6.29-meters. Liburd's distance set a new school record for the Lady T-birds while also improving her national qualifying mark. Also setting a new school record was Victoria Villanueva in the pole vault. Villanueva cleared 12-feet, 10.25-inches. Villanueva also improved her qualifying mark.

The other improved qualifying marks belonged to Liburd (triple jump), Kyra Atkins (60-meter hurdles), and Erin Sermons (400-meters). Liburd had a jump of 40-feet in the triple jump while Atkins ran the 60-meter hurdles in 8.91 seconds. Sermons finished the 400-meters in 55.92 seconds.

As for the first time qualifiers, Monique Grant earned a spot at nationals in the 400 while Britnie Dixon qualified in the 800 and Demisha Roswell earned a spot in the 60-meter dash. Grant ran the 400 in 56.03 seconds while Dixon finished the 800 in 2 minutes and 25.08 seconds. Roswell ran the 60 in 7.78 seconds.
