2020 NJCAA Women’s Indoor Track & Field Rating Index – Week 5
NEW ORLEANS – It's closer than it's been all season at the top of the NJCAA Women's Indoor Track & Field Rating Index that was released on Wednesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
The Week 5 ratings show just how close next week's NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships are likely to be on March 6-7 in Lynchburg, Virginia.
New Mexico JC is still No. 1 but a new No. 2 emerged with Barton (Kan.) CC leading No. 3 Iowa Central CC and No. 4 South Plains (Texas) as the followers easily reached their highest point totals of the year.
There were six position changes in the top-10, but the week's biggest mover was No. 23 Colby (Kan.) CC, which shot up 11 spots.
The Thunderbirds of New Mexico JC lead the ratings as well as number of national leaders, where their total of seven is more than twice as much as any other team. Flomena Asekol is responsible for three individually (800, 1000 and mile) as well as being part of the distance medley relay team. Also leading the country from NMJC are Demisha Roswell (60 hurdles), Victoria Villanueva (pole vault) and Susan Francis (long jump).
The new No. 2 is defending champion Barton (Kan.) CC. The Cougars made a huge gain this week to its highest point total in the ratings, and they occupy the top positions in the 400 with Christal Mosley, shot put with Fiona Richards and the 4×400 relay.
Dropping a notch to No. 3 is Iowa Central CC, despite a season-high point total in the ratings. The Tritons have two national leaders in Eleonora Curtabbi (3000) and Lea Grady (weight throw).
South Plains is at No. 4 with their best ratings point total, one that would have been No. 2 two weeks ago. The Texans have three athletes leading the nation inRosemary Chukwuma (60), Gladys Jemaiyo (5000) and Onaara Obamuwagun (triple jump).
No. 5 – and the closest they've been to No. 1 this year – is Cloud County (Kan.) CC. The T-Birds lead the country in the 200 with Mercy Ntia-Obong and pentathlon with Maryse Mbenoun, both with PRs this weekend.
The rest of the top-10 also saw some shifting and is now completed with No. 6 Monroe-New Rochelle (N.Y.), No. 7 Iowa Western CC, No. 8 Butler (Kan.) CC, No. 9 Bryant & Stratton (Va.) and No. 10 Cowley (Kan.).
