T-Birds Overwhelm Broncos with 30 Runs in Doubleheader

The T-Birds grinded out a 12-6 win in the opening bout of a four-game series against New Mexico Military Institute Friday afternoon. 

EJ Miramontes was the starter for the T-Birds in Game 1 against the Broncos. The sophomore ace went five innings striking out seven batters and giving up two earned runs on six hits. The sophomore has 57 strikeouts on the year and a 2.78 ERA.

Garrett Tiele earned his third win of the year coming in relief of Miramontes. He allowed five hits and four earned runs in one inning of play.

Third baseman Dylan Jasso went 3-for-3 with a solo shot in the bottom of the fifth, a double, and three runs scored.

Shortstop Brent Iredale was 2-for-3 recording a solo homer in the fifth, a double, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Second baseman Aaron Lugo went 1-for-2 with a double, two RBIs, and two runs scored. 

Catcher Lorenzo Morresi finished with a double and a sac fly. Left fielder Erick Ballenilla had two RBIs and one run scored in the 6-run win over NMMI. 

The T-Birds have won 13 straight games and are 35-9 (22-3) on the season. NMJC continues to be in control of the first place spot in the WJCAC.

Game 2 

Starting pitcher Robert Bonilla earned his fourth win of the season in an 18-7 run-rule win over the New Mexico Military Institute Broncos. Bonilla gave up three earned runs and struck out four in three innings of work. The El Paso native has a 4.15 ERA and 33 strikeouts on the season.

The second inning featured four home runs with John David Moreno and Dylan Jasso hitting back-to-back solo jacks to begin the inning. Two batters later Aaron Lugo hit a two-run homer and then was followed up by Erick Ballenilla, who hit a solo shot to make the score 10-3 after two innings.

Ballenilla, a left fielder, hit a 2-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the game 18-7 with the run rule in effect. The freshman finished the matchup batting 2-for-3 with four RBIs, three runs scored, and two homers. 

Third baseman Dylan Jasso was 3-for-3 with a home run, two doubles, three RBIs, and four runs scored.

Second baseman Aaron Lugo went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, three runs scored, a double, and a home run. Shortstop Brent Iredale was 3-for-3 with four runs scored, three RBIs, a double, and a 2-run home run in the third inning. 

First baseman Luis Gonzalez finished with a double, an RBI, and a sac fly. Designated hitter Mark Henning was 1-for-1 with two RBIs and a run scored. Center fielder David Moreno went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, an RBI, and a solo home run.

The Thunderbirds finished with six homers on the day.

The T-Birds have won 14 straight games and are 36-9 (23-3) on the season. NMJC stays atop the WJCAC standings with the win.
