The Thunderbirds split the doubleheader on Thursday with the difference in each game being one run.
Game 1
NMJC baseball fell in heartbreaking fashion 9-8 against Seminole State in Game 1 of the three-game series.
The T-Birds allowed two runs in the top of the second. NMJC tied the score in the bottom of the third scoring on a Lachlan Maude homer and an RBI single by Julius Ramirez.
Seminole grabbed the lead back in the top of the fourth scoring three runs to make the difference 5-2 in favor of Seminole. The Trojans and T-Birds both scored runs in the fifth to bring the score to 6-3.
NMJC needed a big inning in the sixth in order to stay in the game. The T-Birds offense complied, scoring on an RBI single by Talan Barraza, an RBI single by Ramirez, and a go-ahead 2-run homer by Lane Arroyos. NMJC ended the sixth up 7-6.
Seminole took the lead back in the seventh scoring two runs off a T-Bird error to end the top half ahead 8-7. A Barraza single in the bottom half scored Jorge De Los Santos to even the score up at 8-8 after seven.
Seminole tacked on another run in the eighth which proved to be the difference as the T-Birds fell by one run, 9-8, in eight innings.
First baseman Lane Arroyos was 2-of-4 with a 2-run homer. Catcher Lachlan Maude went 2-for-3 with a solo homer.
DH Julius Ramirez went 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Shortstop Talan Barraza was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs.
Cade Smith pitched three innings striking out eight while allowing two earned runs. Justin Nicks came in relief going two innings striking out three and allowing three runs but zero earned.
The Thunderbirds ended Game 1 with nine hits and three errors.
Game 2
The Thunderbirds scored all five runs via the long ball during Game 2's 5-4 win over Seminole State College.
The Trojans got on the board first, scoring in the top of the first. Lane Arroyos hit a solo homer in the bottom of the first to tie the score at 1 apiece after one inning. NMJC took the lead on a 2-run jack by Luis Urias in the second.
Casen Savage gave NMJC a 5-1 lead with a 2-run home run in the bottom of the fourth. Seminole hit a sac fly and a 2-run homer to pull within one run in the fifth inning.
Dominick Maese closed the game for the T-Birds on the mound in the seventh. Maese earned the save pitching one inning and striking out three of the four batters he faced.
Starting pitcher Brayan Orrantia pitched four innings earning the win after allowing one hit, no earned runs, and striking out eight.
Second baseman Luis Urias went 1-for-2 with a 2-run homer. Center fielder Casen Savage was 1-for-3 with a 2-run home run.
First baseman Lane Arroyos was 2-for-3 with a solo homer. The T-Birds finished with seven hits and two errors in the win.
