T-Bird (M-Golf) Ends Fall Ranked No. 7

The NMJC men's golf team closed the fall season with a third-place finish at the Paul Chavez Invitational Friday, Nov. 1.

The T-Birds finished 4-over par for the tournament at the Odessa CC Old Course (par-72) behind second place Midland College (-7) and tournament host winner Odessa College (-11). Odessa College's Adam Bresnu won the tournament at 13-under par (67-71-65).

The Thunderbirds shot 295-279-294 over two days to finish 15 shots back of Odessa College. The second-round 279 (-9) was tied for the low round of the tournament with Odessa's final-round 279.  

Sophomore Henry Drake recorded his best finish of the semester this week in Odessa, Texas after he fired rounds of 71-69-70. Drake posted 6-under to finish in solo third place in the final tournament of the fall.  

Elias Pettersson went 72-68-73 in three rounds of play this week. The Swede's 4-under 68 in the second round was the second lowest round of the tournament by a player in Odessa. Pettersson tied for fourth place which was his lowest finish of the season and third top 10 of the season.  

Freshman Oliver Ruutu finished T-17 at 4-over following rounds of 74-71-75. Andrew Park ended the tournament at 17-over par in a tie for 46th place. Park produced rounds of 80-77-76 in three rounds at the Old Course. 

Freshman Jake Yrene was the final contributor counting toward the team score. Yrene came in 48th place at 18-over. The New Mexico native went 78-71-85 over the course of 54 holes. 

PJ Herron was the top individual for the Thunderbirds this week shooting 10-over par to place 30th in Odessa. The freshman posted rounds of 78-75-73 in his final three rounds of the fall season. 

Paul Noel shot 78-74-77 to record a score of 13-over at the Paul Chavez Invitational. Noel ended his 2024 year with a T-39th place finish as the final individual to compete this week.

The Thunderbirds ended the fall ranked as the No. 7 team in the country behind No. 1 Midland College. NMJC will begin the 2024-25 season in Melbourne, Fla., Feb. 3-4 at the Titan Winter Invite at Suntree Country Club.
