NMJC Men’s T&F Second After Day 2 of NJCAA Nationals.

NMJC Men’s T&F Second After Day 2 of NJCAA Nationals.

The New Mexico Junior College men's track and field team is currently in second place with 42 points following Day 2 action at the NJCAA DI Men's Championship.

South Plains leads at the national meet by nine with 51 points overall.

Khybah Dawson was the first All-American for the T-Bird men on Day 1. Dawson finished runner-up in the long jump with a leap of 7.84m. The jump was .02m behind the first-place finisher Anthony Woods.

Indoor national champion long jumper Kelsey Daniel came in third place in the long jump with a leap of 7.78m. NMJC picked up 14 points in the long jump.

Indoor pole vault national champion Dalton Smith was the runner-up in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.82M. The bar was raised after he cleared 4.82m and the remaining competitors could not get over the raised height.

This led to South Plains' Django Segovia winning due to him clearing the previous jump on his first attempt. Smith earned the T-Birds eight points in the event.

Weather delayed start of the 10,000m race scheduled for Thursday night. The race was postponed to Friday morning at 7:45 a.m.

German Vega had to set an early alarm when he competed in the 10,000m race Friday morning. The early wake-up call did not seem to bother the Argentinian as he finished runner-up in the event with a time of 30:58.93. The second-place finish added eight points to the T-Birds total.

It was Tomas Vega's turn to make an impact on the track for the T-Birds. German's twin brother was a runner-up as well on Friday with his second-place finish in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:13.95.

German Vega, fresh off his morning 10,000m run, gathered enough energy to be the Thunderbirds first two-time All-American at the 2023 NJCAA Track and Field Championships. German came in fifth place in the 3000m steeplechase finishing the race in 9:36.76.

The twins 12 points in the steeplechase gave NMJC a boost to their team overall point total of 42. The T-Birds have six All-Americans through the first two days of competition.

Saturday features the finals for the javelin, shot put, triple jump, discus, 4x100m relay, 1500m, 400m, 100mH,100m, 800m, 400mH, 200m, 5000m, and 4x400m relay.

The NJCAA will crown two national champions at 4 p.m. MDT following Saturday's slate.
