Dawson’s Jump in Lubbock Ranks No. 2 in NJCAA

The T-Bird men's track & field team finished the meet with five national qualifying times, four improved qualifying marks, and one school record at the Jarvis Scott Open Feb. 9-10.  

Jumper Khybah Dawson flew 7.71m in the long jump to notch an improved qualifying mark. The jump is .24m beyond his initial qualifying mark and ranks No. 2 in the NJCAA for the event.

Hurdler Amir Williams was .17 seconds faster this go-around in the 60mH as he posted an improved qualifying time of 7.91. The time ranks him No. 3 in the NJCAA for the hurdles.

Alex Keter continues to be in great form for NMJC. The sophomore raced to a 2:28.86 improved national standard finish in the 1000m. The time is 3.74 seconds faster than his previous best and is No. 8 in the NJCAA for the event. 

The T-Birds had three other runners nationally qualify in the 1000m race. German Vega finished the race with a time of 2:31.58, Cyprien Bille recorded a 2:32.23, and Brian Cheruiyot finished in 2:32.43.

Sprinter Kimarlie Stewart matched his season-best time of 6.74 in the 60m dash. Sophomore Dyimond Walker was a national qualifier in the 800m after recording a 1:56.43. Distance runner Wilson Navarrete just met the national standard in the 3000m coming in at 8:40.35. 

The Thunderbirds will now have a few weeks off to prepare for the 2024 NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship on March 1-2 in Gainesville, Fla., at the Alachua County Sports and Events Center.
