Thunderbird (M-Track) Adds 2 Nationals Titles in Day 1 of the Indoor Championships

The NMJC men's track & field team finished Day 1 of the 2025 NJCAA Indoor T&F Championships with two individual national champions, one relay All-American, and four individual All-Americans.

The Thunderbirds are currently in second place with 29 points behind Odessa (33).

Samuel Ospina won the pole vault national championship with a clearance of 5.12m. Ospina's All-American performance broke the school record for the third time this season and earned NMJC 10 points to the team total.

Mawali Osunniyi was crowned the high jump national champion after clearing 2.12m on Friday night. The sophomore jumper earned 10 points to the team total as NMJC swept the high jump champion award with Osunniyi and Tiana Petrova winning the men's and women's medal.

The distance medley relay team of Cyprien Bille, Chevoney Reid, Romain Toth, and Alexandre Fablet finished in fifth place with a time of 10:03.01. The squad set the DMR school record and picked up four points in the process.  

Johnathon Rodgers earned his first All-American distinction in the long jump with a leap of 7.55m. The mark was enough to place fifth and add four points to the team total.

Josh Sweetnam earned All-American status in the shot put with his throw of 17.04m. The freshman thrower broke his own school record with the mark and earned NMJC one point toward the team total. 

After Day 1 in the heptathlon, Jonathan Da Silva is eighth with 2681 points and Ilias Arifi is ninth with 2653 points. The duo will pick things up Saturday morning bright and early at 9:30 p.m. CST. 

Josh Sweetnam and Joao Dalandrea start things off on the throws end at 11 a.m. in the weight throw finals. The 4x800m team is next and consists of Adolf Kauba, Cyprien Bille, Erwan Darrieulat, and Romain Toth and will race in Heat 3 in Lane 4.  

David Nyamufarira is set to compete in the 60m finals in Lane 5. Johnathon Rodgers looks to pick up his second All-American distinction this weekend in the triple jump finals where he is in flight 2.

Freshmen Raheim Scott and Adolf Kauba each qualified for the 600m finals. Scott will run in Lane 3 of Heat 1 and Kauba will slot in Lane 6 of Heat 2. The T-Birds have three runners in the 400m finals. TK Pahuwa will race in Heat 1 Lane 4 while Benjamin Nsiah is in Lane 3 of Heat 1. NJCAA No. 1 Bovel McPherson is in Lane 5 of Heat 2. 

Romain Toth is the only entry in the 800m finals for the T-Birds and will run in Lane 1. David Nyamufarira and Bovel McPherson both qualified for the finals in the 200m.  Nyamufarira is Lane 4 of Heat 2 and McPherson is in Lane 5 of the same heat. 

The final race of the day is the 4x400m relay. The team will consist of TK Pahuwa, Benjamin Nsiah, Bovel McPherson, and Raheim Scott out of Lane 6 in Heat 5.

Day 2 starts with the heptathlon at 9:30 a.m. CST and ends with the 4x400m relay around 4:30 p.m. CST.
