T-Birds Are 10-2 in WJCAC Conference Play After Beating Howard College at Home

The T-Birds played the Howard College Hawks Thursday night for their last home game of the 2021-22 season in Caster Activity Center. The T-Birds beat the Hawks 59-43. 

The Hawks put themselves on the board first with a layup just one minute into the game. After two 3-pointers and a free throw made by Howard, the T-Birds were behind by one point, 9-8, with 4 minutes left in the first quarter. This was the only lead the Haws would have on the T-Birds Thursday night. A 3-pointer made by sophomore Cabria Lewis, 2 free throws from freshman Mariama Sow, and two layups made by freshmen Madina Camara and Sandra Magolico put the T-Birds on top at the end of the first quarter by 12 points, 23-11.  

The T-Birds maintained thier lead throughout the second quarter and continued to outscore the Hawks. Freshman Duda Raimundo made a 3-pointer with 4 minutes left in the first half putting the T-Birds ahead 13, 29-16. Sandra Magolico made a layup to end the half. The T-Birds went into half time ahead of the Hawks 31-18. 

In the third quarter, the Hawks were outscored by the T-Birds 14-11. Precious Cowan and Cabria Lewis both made a 3-pointer in the third quarter to lengthen the T-Bird lead. The T-Birds went into the final quarter ahead of gthe Hawks 45-29. 

With 6 minutes left in the game the T-Birds were ahead 20 points. Sophomore Jada Miller, freshman Bianca Juzzo, Precious Cowan, and freshman Madjiguene Pene all made free throws in the fourth quarter. Breeley Oakley from Howard made a 3-pointer with 40 second left, but it was too late as the T-Birds were ahead by 16. The T-Birds won 59-43. NMJC womens basketball is now 10-2 in WJCAC conference play.  

Top scorer in the first half for the T-Birds was sophomore Precious Cowan with 12 points, 7 rebounds, and 1 steal. Following Cowan was Sandra Magolico with 10 points, 13 rebounds, and 2 steals. Cabria Lewis and Madina Camara also contributed with 8 points each.
