Forward Danna Grenald scored 19 points and added seven rebounds as No. 18 NMJC Thunderbirds defeated Howard College 61-46 Thursday night.
The T-Birds trailed only once all game 3-2. NMJC would close out the first quarter with a 13-8 lead over the Hawks. The Thunderbirds outscored Howard 14-9 in the second quarter to open up a 10-point lead, 27-17, headed into the break.
NMJC extended the lead to 19 points at the end of the third quarter, 47-28. The T-Birds led by as many as 25 points with 5:09 left in the game. The Thunderbirds finished off the Hawks, who were limited to nine active players, with a final score of 61-46.
Guard Delma Zita recorded 12 points and three steals in the 15-point win. Guard Madina Camara finished with eight points and three steals. Guard Sydney Hobbs tallied six points, four rebounds, and four steals
The T-Birds shot 25-of-64 (39.1%) from the field, 1-for-13 (7.7%) from the three-point line, and forced a conference game-high 33 turnovers in the win over Howard.
The Thunderbirds improve to 15-3 on the year and 4-1 in conference. NMJC will play Frank Phillips College Saturday, Jan. 28 at 2 p.m. CDT in Borger, Texas.
