Thunderbirds Move to 5-0 in Conference

Sophomore guard Filipa Calisto scored 13 points and shot 50% from the field as the Thunderbirds defeated Midland College 70-54. 

The T-Birds exploded in the first quarter outscoring the Chaps 29-12 headed into the second quarter. It was all Midland in the second quarter as they cut the 17-point lead down to eight points at the half, 41-33. 

The third quarter was back in favor of NMJC as the T-Birds took control of the game with a 14-3 run in the final seven minutes of the quarter.

The Thunderbirds would go on to defeat the Chaps by 16 points. 

Pania Davis finished with her ninth double-double of the season. The freshman forward recorded 12 points and 11 rebounds in the win Monday night. 

Sophomore guard Aaliyah Holmes finished with 15 points and five rebounds. Freshman guard Nuria Estrade knocked down three 3-pointers off the bench on her way to 11 points for the night. Hobbs local Wisdom Anthony added nine points. 

The Thunderbirds struggled shooting going 27-of-83 (32.5%) from the field, 7-of-26 (26.9%) from the 3-point line, and 9-of-13 (69.2%) from the free throw line. NMJC held Midland to 28.6% from the field and forced 17 turnovers. 

No. 6 NMJC jumps to 16-4 (5-0) on the year and will face Frank Phillips College in Borger, Texas on Thursday, Jan. 25 at 5:45 p.m. CST.
