Aaliyah Holmes Breaks 3-Point School Record

T-Bird guard Aaliyah Holmes had a career day setting the NMJC school record for most 3-pointers in a game with nine as the T-Birds took down Midland College 82-63 on the road Thursday evening. 

Holmes took down Erica Gonzalez's 24-year old record of eight three pointers, which was set against South Plains College on Jan. 17, 2000. The sophomore guard made two 3-pointers in each of the first three quarters.

Holmes, an Austin, Texas native, broke the record on the T-Birds final basket of the night with 42 seconds to go in the game.

The Thunderbirds controlled the game throughout the evening. NMJC led by 11 points, 26-15, after quarter one. The T-Birds expanded their lead to 18 points at the half with a 46-28 advantage.

The second half was slightly more competitive, but NMJC still outscored the Midland by one point and went on to defeat the Chaps by 19 points, 82-63.  

Cacia Antonio finished with a career-high 15 rebounds while adding 19 points and nine assists. The sophomore guard notched her fourth double-double fo the season. Filipa Calisto registered 13 points, six rebounds, and five steals. Amyah Sutton recorded nine points and five rebounds. 

Pania Davis scored eight points, notched 11 rebounds, and four steals in the 19-point win. Davis is five blocks away from tying the school record for most blocks in a single season. 

The Thunderbirds shot 29-for-73 (39.7%) from the field, 14-of-36 (38.9%) from 3-point land, and 10-of-16 (62.5%) from the free throw line. NMJC held the Chaps to 33.9% from the field.

No. 9 NMJC moves to 22-5 (11-1) on the year and will play Frank Phillips College in Hobbs, NM Monday, Feb. 26 at 5:45 p.m. MST. The T-Birds will host sophomore night five minutes prior to tip. The Thunderbirds are recognizing three sophomores in Filipa Calisto, Aaliyah Holmes, and Clara Bandh.

The T-Birds (11-1) are one game ahead of Odessa College (10-1) in the WJCAC standings.
