The T-Bird women's basketball team trounced Barton Community College by 48 points, 86-38, on Saturday, Nov. 2.
The Thunderbirds were tied 4-4 and then went on a 14-0 run to lead 18-4 with a little over a minute to play in the first quarter. The Thunderbirds had a 13-point edge, 19-6, following the first period. The T-Birds outpaced Barton by 12 points in the second quarter to extend their lead to 25 points, 42-17.
NMJC continued their impressive play in the second half outpacing the Cougars 44-21 to win the game 68-38.
Amyah Sutton was three points shy of eclipsing her career-high 27 points when she recorded 24 points on Saturday afternoon. The sophomore forward was 8-of-13 from the field with two triples.
Sophomore forward Pania Davis scored 12 points and added six rebounds along with three blocks. Guard Cacia Antonio finished with eight points, six boards, and three assists.
Freshman guard Kaycee Steinke scored all nine of her points via three-pointers. Jada Graves finished with eight points and four assists off the bench. Emma Najjuma recorded seven rebounds in the 48-point win.
"We took care of the ball today," NMJC women's basketball head coach Austin Mefford said. "We had a lot of people do great things in the game. Amyah Sutton scored 24 points. We played the first half and were up 25 points without Pania on the floor. Jada Graves came in and scored in the second half and got some assists."
The T-Birds shot 31-of-70 (44.3%) from the field, 10-for-26 (38.5%) from the 3-point line, and 14-of-23 (60.9%) from the charity stripe. The Thunderbirds forced 20 turnovers and held the Cougars to 27.3% from the field and 26.7% from three-point land.
NMJC has yet to trail their opponents through two games this season.
The No. 7 T-Birds move to 2-0 overall and will play No. 14 Dodge City CC in Odessa, Texas Friday, Nov. 8 at 4 p.m. CST. The Thunderbirds will then play Bishop State Saturday, Nov. 9 at 12 p.m. CST. NMJC will not travel on the road again until January of 2025.
