The NMJC women's basketball team stayed perfect this weekend with a gritty 78-59 win over Grayson College on Sunday afternoon.
The Thunderbirds trailed the Vikings 8-5 two minutes into the matchup. A Nuria Estrade layup at the 6:14 mark in the first quarter gave NMJC an 11-10 lead, which gave the T-Birds the lead for good. The Thunderbirds ended the first quarter with a five-point advantage, 22-17.
A three ball by Grayson opened up the scoring in the second quarter and cut the lead to two points, 22-20. NMJC erupted offensively the rest of the quarter going on a 17-0 run to move their lead to 19 points, 39-20 with 1:20 to go in the half. The T-Birds would take a 41-23 lead into halftime.
The Thunderbirds eased off the gas in the second half and went on to outscore Grayson by one point to win the game by 19 points, 78-59.
Guard Cacia Antonio finished with a game-high 19 points, five rebounds, five assists, and four steals. The sophomore was 6-of-6 from the charity stripe.
Amyah Sutton recorded 18 points, five rebounds, and three assists Sunday afternoon. The sophomore forward was also perfect from the line going 5-for-5.
Sophomore Pania Davis tallied 14 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks. The forward now has five double-doubles this year.
Emma Najjuma recorded a career-high eight points and five rebounds in the contest.
The T-Birds shot 29-of-60 (48.3%) from the field, 6-for-20 (30.0%) from the 3-point line, and 14-of-15 (93.3%) from the charity stripe. The Thunderbirds forced 13 turnovers and held the Vikings to 33.8% from the field and 28.1% from three-point land.
NMJC is shooting 79.7% from the free throw line, which is No. 3 in the country. The T-Birds are No. 2 in the country in blocks with 7.6 BPG.
The No. 3 Thunderbirds improve to 7-0 on the season and will play No. 25 Snow College at 6 p.m. MST on Thursday, Nov. 21.
