T-Bird (WBB) Survives OT in Season Opener
The Thunderbirds held on in overtime 75-69 against Monroe University in the first game of the 2025-26 season.
The T-Birds led the Mustangs at the half 41-26. Monroe outscored the T-Birds 21-12 in the third quarter to cut the lead to 53-47. The score was tied 60-60 following a Monroe bucket with 4:08 left in the game.
The Mustangs hit a crucial 3-pointer to take a four-point lead with 1:41 remaining. During the next possession, T-Bird sophomore guard Jada Graves split the defense on the inbounds play for a wide open layup to cut the deficit to two points at the 1:17 mark.
Monroe worked the clock down in their next possession, but they missed a deep 3-pointer to keep NMJC in reach. Forward Addison Edwards was fouled on the rebound and made two clutch free throws to tie the game at 67 with 44 seconds to go.
NMJC received the ball with a chance to win the game in regulation with nine seconds remaining. Rekiah Bowen's baseline jumper from eighth feet fell off the rim as time expired and the T-Birds went into overtime. The T-Birds outscored Monroe 8-2 in the extra period to win 75-69.
Freshman Luisa Amaral registered an astounding 18 rebounds, 14 points, and six assists. Point guard Jada Graves recorded 14 points, nine assists, and four rebounds.
Addison Edwards had 14 points, nine rebounds, and two blocks in her Thunderbird debut. Sophomore Kaycee Steinke was big off the bench hitting three triples in the second half for a total of nine points. Freshman Rekiah Bowen came off the bench and finished with 13 points.
The T-Birds shot 25-for-80 (31.3%) from the field, 11-of-34 (32.4%) from the 3-point line, and 14-of-16 (87.5%) from the free throw line. NMJC forced 13 turnovers and held the Mustangs to 25.5% from the field.
NMJC will play next against Fort Hays Tech Monday, Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. MST in Hobbs, NM.
