T-Bird (W-Golf) Places 4th in Corpus to Start Spring

The spring season is upon the NMJC women's golf team as they placed fourth at the 2025 Islander Classic in Corpus Christi, Texas. 

The Thunderbirds shot 311-303-306 to finish 56-over for the tournament which was behind three DIs in Lamar (+50), UTRGV (+49), and Texas A&M Corpus Christi (+36). 

The T-Birds were the top performing junior college team in the tournament hosted by Corpus Christi CC. The Thunderbirds scored 40 strokes better than NJCAA member Weatherford College and were 48 shots ahead of McLennan CC. NMJC also led the field in par-4 scoring at 43-over (4.29).

Wawa Booncharn picked up right where she left off in the fall this week in Corpus Christi. The sophomore shot 78-76-74 in 54 holes to place eighth overall at 12-over. Booncharn has finished in the top 10 in 5-of-6 tournaments so far this season. 

Sophomore Olivia Heard played well in her first 36 holes shooting 77-75 to finish the day at 8-over. Heard's final round was more difficult as she posted an 81 to finish the tournament T-17 at 17-over. 

Nanami Hayakawa's first 36 holes were solid as she fired a 78-75 to finish at 9-over following Day 1. The final day Hayakawa shot an 8-over 80 to finish in a tie with her teammate Heard in 17th place at 17-over.

Sophomore Hinano Kishida shot 78-82-74 over 54 holes to finish in 20th place at 18-over. Freshman Giuliana Frutos ended the tournament T-21 at 19-over following rounds of 80-77-78. 

Stefany Crozier was the only individual at the tournament for the T-Birds this week. Crozier finished T-28 at 24-over par after progressing each round by shooting 81-80-79. 

The Thunderbirds are ranked as the No. 4 team in the country to start the spring season behind No. 3 Seminole State, No. 2 Odessa College, and No. 1 Daytona State. 

NMJC's next tournament will be the Thunderbird Invitational in Hobbs, NM Feb. 24-25 at Rockwind Community Links.
