NMJC Women’s T&F Sits in 4th Following Day 2 of NJCAA Nationals

The New Mexico Junior College women's track and field team is currently in fourth place with 25.5 points after the conclusion of Day 2 action at the NJCAA DI Women's Championship. 

Cloud County Community College leads the national meet with 55 points. The Cloud Thunderbirds have a 23.5 point cushion over second place Barton County at the championship.

Aaliyah Lindsay was the first All-American for the T-Bird women on Day 1. Lindsay finished in fifth place in the long jump with a leap of 5.92m. The jump secured four points for the T-Birds.

The second All-American for the Thunderbirds was the women's 4x800m relay team. The squad consisted of Vanessa Gallegos, Minankolo Magassa, Daisy Jerop, and Joan Kimalel. The quartet placed sixth overall with a time of 9:51.51. NMJC added another three points to their total with the finish.

Weather delayed start of the 10,000m race scheduled for Thursday night. The race was postponed to Friday morning at 7 a.m. Damaris Chewon was their top performer in the race earning All-American status after finishing runner-up in the race with a time of 38:22.95. 

Carolyne Kimaiyo was third in the 10,000m after crossing the line in 39:37.85. The runner-up and third place finished brought 14 points to the Thunderbirds at the start of Day 2.  

Daniel Hinds had the best performance of her NMJC career in the high jump Friday afternoon. The freshman jumper cleared a personal-best 1.70m in the high jump to finish in fourth place for the T-Birds and add an additional 4.5 points to the T-Bird total.

The Thunderbirds have one relay and four individual All-Americans through the first two days. 

Saturday features the finals for the javelin, shot put, triple jump, discus, 4x100m relay, 1500m, 400m, 100mH,100m, 800m, 400mH, 200m, 5000m, and 4x400m relay.   

The NJCAA will crown two national champions at 4 p.m. MDT following Saturday's slate.
