Kihuyu Improves on her No. 1 Ranked 400m Time

The T-Bird women's track and field team competed Feb. 14-15 at the Jarvis Scott Open in Lubbock, Texas.

NMJC ended the weekend with seven improved qualifiers and four new national qualifiers.

Sophomore sprinter Nandy Kihuyu improved on her 400m time this weekend in Lubbock. Kihuyu ran a 54.43 to better her time by .25 seconds in the event which regained her position as the No. 1 ranked runner. The Englishwoman is .19 seconds faster than second place.  

Tiana Petrova moved up to the No. 1 spot in the NJCAA for the high jump with her leap of 1.70m. The clearance is .05m better than her previous jumps and is .02m in front of second place in the NJCAA. 

Sophomore Jody Ann Mitchell came across the line in 1:23.24 to improve on her qualifying time for the 600Y. The time was converted to 1:33.23 for the 600m to rank No. 3 in the NJCAA. Mitchell also competed in the 800 this weekend where she finished in 2:12.64. The time was 1.76 seconds faster than her previous qualifying time and is now No. 4 in JUCO. 

Emilly Silva was the second of the four T-Bird runners to nationally qualify or improve on their qualifying time in the 800m. Silva finished with a time of 2:14.37 to improve on her previous time by 2.87 seconds. The finish is No. 6 in the NJCAA for the event. 

Sophomore Daphne Kausz was the third improved qualifier in the 800. Kausz finished with a time of 2:20.69 to better her time by .96 seconds (NJCAA No. 22). The Frenchwoman also qualified nationally in the 1000m with a finish of 3:07.73. She ranks No. 20 in the event. 

Tyfane Martins nationally qualified in the 800m finishing with a time of 2:22.00 to rank No. 31 in the event. Jayne Elvin reached the national standard in the 1000m finishing the race in 3:07.11. Elvin will slot into the No. 18 spot in the event. 

Ines Mrabet nationally qualified in the 5000m with a time of 18:02.51 to rank No. 17 in the NJCAA. The mile relay squad of Tuwana McLean, Kamaria Knight, Jody Ann Mitchell, and Nandy Kihuyu improved by 6.92 seconds to finish with a time of 3:44.18. The 4x400m team is ranked No. 2 in the NJCAA for the event.

The T-Birds will have a small home meet Feb. 22-23 at Ross Black Track before they prepare for the 2025 NJCAA Track & Field Championships in Lubbock, Texas March 7-8 at the Texas Tech Sports Performance Center.
