
T-Bird (W-Track) Wins 2 National Titles in Day 1 of Indoor Championships
The NMJC women's track & field team finished Day 1 of the 2025 NJCAA Indoor T&F Championships with one individual national champion, one relay national champion, and four All-Americans.
The Thunderbirds are currently in fourth place with 28 points behind Barton (33), Odessa (36), and Iowa Western (55).
The T-Birds started the first race of the meet with a national championship in the distance medley relay. The All-American squad consisted of Emilly Silva, Ysanne Peart, Jody Ann Mitchell, and Amal Kachouri. The quartet broke the DMR school record with a time of 11:47.42 to secure the valuable 10 points for the women's team score.
Freshman Tiana Petrova was crowned the high jump national champion after leaping a career-best 1.75 at the Texas Tech Sports Performance Center. Petrova clearance was .01m off the school record. The All-American placement adds 10 points to the T-Bird total.
Esteisy Salas-Lozano finished third in the shot put finals. The sophomore thrower earned All-American status with her throw of 14.85m and picked up six points. Sophomore Kavel Ritchie scored two points for NMJC in the long jump. The All-American leapt 5.72m to place seventh in the event.
The Day 2 in Lubbock, Texas will begin with the triple jump where NMJC has Janita Antipina, Kavel Ritchie, and Sofia Mosquera Rodriquez. The women's 4x800m team of Emilly Silva, Daphne Kausz, Tyfane Martins, and Jody Ann Mitchell competes next in Heat 2 Lane 2.
Jody Ann Mitchell will also compete in the 600m finals in Lane 5 of Heat 1 and Ysanne Peart will be in the same heat out of Lane 3. NMJC will have three in the finals for the weight throw. The trio are defending national champion Tania Millena Ancelmo Da Silva, Esteisy Salas-Lozano, and Athilia Pryce.
Francesca Alvarado is in Heat 2 of the women's mile while Amal Kachouri runs in Heat 3. Nandy Kihuyu slots in Lane 6 of Heat 2 in the 400m finals. In the 800m, the T-Birds will see Emilly Silva in Lane 3 and Amal Kachouri in Lane 8. The Thunderbirds only entry in the 200m finals is Kamaria Knight who will race in Heat 2 out of Lane 4.
The 1000m will once again feature Emilly Silva in Lane 6 and Amal Kachouri in Lane 9. The final race of the day is the 4x400m relay. The team will consist of Nandy Kihuyu, Kamaria Knight, Jody Ann Mitchell, and Tuwana McLean out of Lane 6 in Heat 5.
Day 2 starts with the heptathlon at 9:30 a.m. CST and ends with the 4x400m relay around 4:30 p.m. CST.
