NMJC (W-Track) Qualifies 9 in Outdoor Season Opener

The NMJC women's track and field team began the outdoor season March 21-22 at the ACU Wes Kittley Invite in Abilene, Texas.

NMJC finished the weekend with nine national qualifiers.

Sophomore sprinter Kamaria Knight had a great start to her outdoor campaign running the 100m dash in 11.41. The time met the national qualifying standard and is currently No. 1 in the NJCAA for the event.  

Sophomore hurdler Maliah Edwards competed for the first time this season and ran a 13.96 in the 100mH. The national qualifying time is ranked No. 2 in the NJCAA.

Nandy Kihuyu and Tuwana McLean both qualified for nationals in the 100m this week. Kihuyu ran in the 100m for the first time in her career finishing in 11.72. The time is No. 6 in the NJCAA. McLean came across the line in 11.72 as well to rank No. 6 in JUCO.

Amari Pratt is the last track athlete on the national qualifying list this week. The sophomore sprinter ran a 24.37 in the 200m to rank No. 5 in the NJCAA. 

Freshman Athilia Pryce led the T-Birds on the field side nationally qualifying in two events. Pryce threw the shot put 12.90m to come in at No. 3 in the NJCAA for outdoor. She ranks No. 2 in the discus following a 44.95m throw. 

The 2024 NJCAA javelin national runner-up Bruna Vieira de Jesus picked up right where she left off last season. The sophomore crossed the national standard with a throw of 47.37m to rank No. 2 in the NJCAA for the event.

The T-Birds 4x100m relay team of Amari Pratt, Nandy Kihuyu, Maliah Edwards, Kamaria Knight blazed their way to a 45.88 finish in Abilene, Texas. The 4x100m squad reached the national qualifying standard and is No. 2 in JUCO for the event. 

NMJC is currently ranked No. 1 in the USTFCCCA Women's Program of the Year Standings with just the outdoor season left to calculate the winner. The team with the lowest total points wins the award.

The T-Birds compete next at two meets simultaneously. NMJC will go to the Texas Relays and Texas State March 27-29 in Austin and San Marcos, Texas.
