The No. 15 New Mexico Junior College volleyball team began the 2023 season with a 3-0 victory over North Central Texas College (25-18, 25-17, 25-22).
Outside hitter Gaby Arias led the Thunderbirds in kills with 10. The Nuevo Laredo, Mexico native also added five digs in the three-set win.
Reigning WJCAC MVP Iva Popovic recorded eight kills and seven digs during the match. Right side Olivia Swipiarski finished the morning with seven kills and six blocks.
Setter Taina de Lima Nunes tallied 15 assists in her first match of the season. Sude Omerickoglu added 13 assists. Libero Addison Carillo ended the day with a team-high seven digs.
The Thunderbirds will play later today at 4 p.m. CDT in the second match of the Midland College Kick-off Classic.
