The NMJC volleyball team finished the Odessa College Invitational with a narrow three-set win over Vernon College (25-15, 25-23, 26-24). 

Sophomore outside hitter Iva Popovic finished the match with 13 kills and eight digs Saturday night. Freshman setter Sude Omerickoglu recorded 16 assists and six digs. 

Sophomore right side Olivia Swipiarski finished with 10 kills, while freshman libero Addison Carillo registered 16 digs in the win over the Chaps. Taina de Lima Nunes finished the evening with 15 assists and eight digs. 

The T-Birds move up to 7-1 on the year with the victory. NMJC takes to the court four times next weekend at the Blinn College Labor Day Tournament Sept. 1-2. The Thunderbirds begin the tournament facing Central Wyoming College at 11 p.m. CDT in Brenham, Texas. 

The T-Birds broke into the top-10 of the NJCAA Week 1 Volleyball Rankings on Monday, Aug. 28. The No. 9 ranking is NMJC's highest in the program's history.
