Jayne Elvin Defeats Damaris Chewon for First Title

The NMJC women's cross country team hosted their first home meet of the season on Friday, Sept. 22 at Harry McAdams Park.

The T-Birds raced well on a beautiful overcast day to win the meet with 17 points. Amarillo College was the runner-up in Hobbs, NM with 55 points.

Jayne Elvin won her first collegiate race of her career by out-kicking Thunderbird teammate Damaris Chewon in the final 600m to post a time of 18:33.17.   

Chewon crossed the finish line in second place with a time of 18:42.61. This was the first time in Chewon's career that she was defeated by her own teammate in a cross country race.    

Sophomore Vanessa Gallegos has begun to solidify herself as the third runner in the T-Bird lineup. The sophomore came in third place with a time of 19:24.04. Carolyne Kimaiyo posted a fifth-place finish of 19:56.47.

Rounding out the team score for the T-Birds was Lisanne Schapendonk. The freshman runner returned from an injury that required her to sit out the last meet in Lubbock. Schapendonk finished in seventh place posting a time of 20:14.93.

Francesca Alvarado came in eighth place (20:27.17). Tyfane Martins recorded an 11th-place finish of 21:06.29 and Morgan Waltmire posted a time of 21:16.09 to place 12th. Jody Ann Mitchell competed in her race of the year on Friday. The freshman completed the race in 22:17.32 to place 17th overall. Daphne Kausz did not participate Friday morning due to injury.

Jayne Elvin brought in the first award of her career Wednesday, Sept. 27. The Corringham, Stanford-Le-Hope, UK native was named the NJCAA DI Runner of the Week for her performance at the NMJC Invitational 5k. 

The T-Birds will have a week off before they begin to gear up for the NMJC Invitational II Friday, Oct. 6 at 5 p.m. MDT in Hobbs, NM at Harry McAdams Park.
